Communism
"still haunts the world," and that's why a group representing some 240
Polish-Canadian groups, as well as groups representing Canadians from
10 other ethnic backgrounds are advocating for a monument to the
victims of Communism to be erected in downtown Ottawa.
The other groups represented include Latvian, Cuban, Czech, Slovakian, Argentine, Chinese, Iranian, Korean, Ukrainian, Estonian and Canadian.
"In
Russia, one-third of the people believe that Stalin 'did more good than
bad for the country,' according to a recent poll. In China, thousands
of dissidents are imprisoned in the slave labour camps known as the
laogai. In North Korea, masses starve as the leadership threatens to
unleash nuclear war. In Cuba, dissidents are routinely imprisoned for
peacefully petitioning for democratic reform."
So reads a petition being circulated by the group. The group wants a parcel of federal land somewhere in the centre of Ottawa to be granted for the monument.
The communities intend to raise the money to build the monument, said Wladyslaw Lizon, national president of the Canadian Polish Congress, an umbrella organization that represents 240 other Polish groups in Canada. "We're still in discussions about how big it would be but it would have to be very noticeable, at least 30 feet tall," Mr. Lizon said. "The leaders of community groups are convinced such a monument should be erected."
Those advocating for the monument are now in the process of setting up a not-for-profit organization that would look after the project. The group, which includes Czech Ambassador Pavel Vosalik, hopes to have the monument erected by the summer of 2009 but first it has to get the federal government onside.
Still, Mr. Lizon feels the Harper government supports the project and has met with Jason Kenney, secretary of state for multiculturalism and Canadian identity. Mr. Kenney has been "very supportive from the beginning," Mr. Lizon said.
Mr. Lizon, who lives in Toronto, was in Ottawa yesterday for the screening of Katyn, a film about Polish officers killed by Soviet secret police during the Second World War. At the same event, an exhibit dedicated to the victims of Holodomor (the Great Famine) in Ukraine, was presented. Both events, held at the National Gallery, were organized by the Embassies of Poland and Ukraine, in collaboration with Mr. Kenney, the Canada-Poland Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Panamanian Honours
An Ottawa doctor received the highest order given by the Panamanian government last Friday.
Charles
Czarnowski, a family physician at the Bruyère Academic Family Health
Team and an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa's family
medicine department, was given the Order of Vasco Nunez de Balboa at a
ceremony hosted by Panamanian Ambassador Romy Vasquez at the Elisabeth
Bruyère Health Centre. This was the first time the government of Panama
had given a Canadian this honour, which it gives to outstanding people,
both foreign and domestic, Ms. Vasquez said.
Dr. Czarnowski was recognized for leading the Bruyère-Panama Project which gives medical care to Panama's indigenous people. The same program has seen a team of several faculty and residents from the University of Ottawa travel to Panama twice a year to direct patient care at a remote location on the Ngobe-Bugle reservation. Some 2,000 patients, many of whom live on less than a loonie a day, get care during each visit. The team also makes a point of teaching local health workers new techniques and practices.
"I'm
humbled and overwhelmed," Mr. Czarnowski said in accepting the award.
He added that he wanted to share the honour with his colleagues,
students, residents and "all who have fought for the basic lives that
we who live in Canada take for granted."

WARSAW, Poland - President Shimon Peres and his Polish counterpart Lech Kaczyński laid wreaths at the Monument to the Heroes of the Ghetto on Tuesday during a ceremony marking 65 years since the Jewish uprising in Warsaw.
During the service, which was attended by hundreds of students, Holocaust survivors and other guests, Peres said "The majority of the uprising fighters died, murdered in cold blood. They lost the fight, but from the point of view of history, there has never been such a victory - a victory of men over human bestiality, of pure souls over fallen ones."
"Yes, the Germans won, thanks to thousands of soldiers shooting without thought and gassing bunkers," Peres said. "What did those terrible Nazis leave to the generations that followed? Only shame, a curse and damnation."
The Israeli president added "Revenge? Of course we want revenge. A Jewish state was established – this is our revenge on the Nazis. The Arab countries attacked us seven times and were unable to defeat us – this is revenge. During times of intifadas and (Iranian) uranium enrichment, it is through peace that the forces of light can avenge the actions of the forces of darkness."
During the ceremony, the head of the Polish armed forces read the names of the Jews who fought at the ghetto, and a rabbi recited Kaddish.
President Kaczyński told those on hand that "the Holocaust period is two generations behind us, but we must never forget what happened then. Although we live in an era in which a return to such events seems almost impossible, we must still keep our eyes open."
On Monday Peres attended a Holocaust memorial ceremony at the Treblinka concentration camp, during which he said "millions of Jews lived here for a thousand years, and though their lives were not always secure, they sustained us as a people.
"It is very hard for me to stand here, but that is not the fault of the Polish people, rather it is the incomparable extermination (of the Jews) carried out by the Nazis," he said.
“I am here today representing
the dead and
the living,” said President Shimon
Peres
before the Polish senate Thursday. “I represent the past, the present
and I believe the future, too. I have come to recite the Kaddish and
sing the Hatikvah.”
Peres,
who also gave speeches at the Warsaw Ghetto uprising Memorial and in
the Treblinka concentration camp, spoke at length about the history of
Polish Jewry. When mentioning the Holocaust, Peres said that the greatest tragedy
occurred in Poland due to the largest concentration of Jews there;
hence the focus of the Jewish pain has been directed at Poland, even
though Germany bears and should bear the responsibility.
“The
remnants of the death camps on Poland’s land will serve as a pillar of
fire in our collective historical memory,” Peres said, adding
that “the
new Poland will bare no resemblance to the occupied one.” Peres also mentioned the names of great Jewish intellectuals,
authors and leaders who were born in Poland, including the president
himself. Upon
concluding his speech, the president revealed his vision for peace:
“The ultimate victory we aspire to is the victory of peace.” Regarding
the ties between Israel and Poland, Peres said, “We can maintain a
positive relationship with the new Poland, and together seek a future
of peace, justice and friendship. The new Poland is one of Israel’s
best allies in the EU.”

the one hand, I was overwhelmed by powerful patriotic feelings,
nationalistic even, when I stood under the blue-and-white flags proudly
carried by Israeli students in the cold winds of Auschwitz and
Majdanek. On the other hand, I was red with shame in the face of the
behavior of Israeli youths during events that required a little respect
and restraint.
Teenagers have not learned a thing
Indifferent
teachers were also there, busy searching for a comfortable spot to lean
on. We also had Education Ministry representatives with hands in their
pockets who observed what was going on without doing a thing – overall,
what we had there was a great shame. With the exception of several
dozen youths who bothered to follow the ceremony and hold up flags, the
Mideastern party continued according to plan and with no connection to
the memory of the Jews who fought the Nazis.
