Hero. Part I: Irena Szpak
Irena and Edwin
Szpak (60th anniversary of marriage)
Let us introduce you to
Irena Szpak (born Rustecka), a Warsaw Insurgent, wife to
the late-Edwin Szpak (1st Armoured Division soldier),
mother of three children and excellent professional who
spend her life translating patents and scientific papers
from German, French, Russian, Japanese and Polish.
She can’t wait to hear from you! Please write in the

Irena Rustecka was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1926. A
gifted student at an all girls’ school, Irena received
supplementary instruction in foreign languages and math
under difficult war-time conditions.
At 16 years of age, Irena joined the clandestine Girl
Guides in 1942 and served as an underground messenger in
the headquarters of col. Edward Pfeiffer (pseud.
"Radwan") during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Under the
code name “Irka”, Irena carried not only messages but
arms to various locations in the city, earning her first
shot of vodka after a particularly harrowing nighttime
mission.
Upon capitulation, she and other insurgents were marched
out of Warsaw. Irena spent the rest of the war in German
POW camps before being liberated by a Polish Battalion
which, unbeknownst to her, included her future husband.
In 1945, she completed her secondary education in a
specially organized school in Maczków – a post-war
Polish community set up in Germany. She also met the
love of her life, Edwin Szpak, there. They got married
and in time had three children before the family
immigrated to Canada in 1955. Irena obtained her BA
degree as an external student at the University of
London (England) a few years later after the family
settled in Ontario.
With credits in math, physics and foreign languages,
Irena worked for eighteen years as a technical
translator in Alcan Labs in Kingston.
The then President of Poland, Lech Walesa, awarded Irena
the Medal of Resistance and the Warsaw Uprising Cross.
Irena has also received The Memorial Medal, which
signifies the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the
Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The Medal honours the living
participants of this historic War World II event.
Irena now resides at a Seniors’ residence in Ottawa
close to two of her children and their family. In
November 2018, She completed a manuscript about her
husband, (who passed in September 2011) called
“Człowieku! Man What a Life!”

Meeting

Easter greeting cards for veterans living in
Canada were prepared by children at the
Presidential Palace of President Andrzej Duda.
It was the second edition of the "A card for a
veteran" campaign.
Wishes from children were received by Warsaw
Uprisnig insurgents, retired professors,
knights of the Order of Virtuti Militari,
members of the Association of Polish
Combatants in Ottawa, Siberians and World War
II veterans, and soldiers fighting at Monte
Cassino. Mrs. Irena Szpak was one of the Card
recipients.

Wręczenie "Kartki dla Weterana" dla pani Ireny
Szpak przez Konsul RP w Ottawie Aleksandrę
Kucy w dniu 11 kwietnia 2017.
Kartki z życzeniami wielkanocnymi dla
weteranów mieszkających w Kanadzie
przygotowywały dzieci w Pałacu Prezydenckim
Prezydenta Andrzeja Dudy. Była to druga edycja
akcji "Kartka dla weterana".
Życzenia od dzieci otrzymali powstańcy
warszawscy, emerytowani profesorowie,
kawalerowie Orderu Virtuti Militari,
członkowie Stowarzyszenia Polskich Kombatantów
w Ottawie, Sybiracy i weterani II Wojny
Światowej oraz żołnierze walczący pod Monte
Cassino.
