- Janina Fialkowska - Mozart’s Piano
concerto Adres: Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre, 355 Cooper St., Ottawa (map) Thirteen Strings presents “Mozartmania!” A new year and Ottawa’s de facto baroque orchestra, Thirteen Strings is delighted to present acclaimed pianist Janina Fialkowska who will perform Mozart’s Piano concerto no. 12 in A major on Tuesday, February 18 at Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (355 Cooper St., Ottawa) at 7:30 pm. For over 40 years, concert pianist Janina Fialkowska has enchanted audiences and critics around the world. She has been praised for her musical integrity, her refreshing natural approach and her unique piano sound thus becoming “one of the Grandes Dames of piano playing” (Frankfurter Allgemeine).

Photo: Ran Keren Born in Canada, Fialkowska began her piano studies with her mother at age 4. Her career was launched in 1974, when the legendary Arthur Rubinstein became her mentor after her prize-winning performance at his inaugural Master Piano Competition, calling her a “born Chopin interpreter” laying the foundation for her lifelong identification with this composer. Canada has bestowed upon her its highest honors: “Officer of the Order of Canada”, the “Governor General’s 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award in Classical Music” (Canada's equivalent to the US Kennedy Centre Awards), as well as three honorary doctorates. She passes on her wide musical experience in master classes and at her annual “International Piano Academy” in Bavaria, where she now resides and makes frequent appearances as a juror of the world's most prestigious piano competitions. In addition, 2020 has the concert celebrating Music Director Kevin Mallon’s 10th Anniversary with the chamber orchestra. That’s 60 concerts in a decade including commissioning 25 new works, two CDs for the Naxos label, inaugurating the Thirteen Strings/uOttawa composition prize (now in its 4th year), and nurturing future musicians through the rebranded Camerata Junior Strings. A string of accomplishments with Mallon at the helm of Ottawa’s premiere chamber orchestra! Additional works at Mozartmania include Mozart’s Salzburg Symphonies and Mallon’s own Stella Splendens. Tickets at $10-$40, are available at The Leading Note, Compact Music and Books on Beechwood and by contacting info@thirteenstrings.ca or calling 613-738-7888. Visit: www.thirteenstrings.ca |
