Day 2023
Saturday, July 1, 2023 Take part in the nation’s biggest birthday party on July 1!The Nation's
Capital is the headquarters
for Canada's birthday
celebration. Each year,
On July 1,
join us in Ottawa–Gatineau
to celebrate Canada’s
birthday!
Canada’s Capital Region buzzes with activity, as Canadians from across the country flock to the Capital to show their national pride. The festivities used to take place on Parliament Hill, in downtown parks and on the streets. Parliament Hill has been the official Canada Day site for over 50 years. Due to the Centre Block Rehabilitation project, last year, the Canada Day main stage moved to a new location - LeBreton Flats Park - just 1.5 kilometre (less than one mile) to the west. Satellite experiences will be offered at the Parliamentary precinct area and at Portage. Join the celebrations at LeBreton Flats Park and elsewhere in the heart of Ottawa – Gatineau! From 9 a.m., a number of activities, animations and shows presented by Canadian artists will give you a chance to celebrate throughout the day. Don’t miss the Tim Hortons Canada day fireworks that will light up the sky as of 10 p.m. Across Canada, you can watch the daytime ceremony and the evening show on the platforms of Canadian broadcasters. All information about the broadcast will follow shortly. Join Canadians and visitors dressed in red and white as they take part in the biggest Canada Day party in the country each year on July 1 in Canada’s capital region! This epic celebration features a variety of free programming at official sites in Ottawa and Gatineau, including interactive activities, appearances by dignitaries and special guests, live performances by top and emerging Canadian musicians, and an impressive fireworks show (weather permitting)! LeBreton Flats Park Canadian Heritage will host the national Canada Day celebrations at LeBreton Flats Park. The daytime ceremony begins at 11:45 a.m., and the evening show starts at 8 p.m. The lineup for the daytime show includes Pierre Kwenders, Delhi 2 Dublin, Tyler Shaw, Josiane, Diyet, Katia Rock and Marie-Josée Dandeneau. The evening show lineup features Jann Arden, Roxane Bruneau, Aysanabee, France D’Amour, Preston Pablo, Les Louanges, Jojo Mason, Dubmatique, Dax, Clerel, Madison Violet, Josh Q and Josiane. The Tim Hortons Fireworks show will wrap up the Canada Day celebrations at 10 p.m. Public Transit OC Transpo is offering free service on Canada Day. There will be no-charge service all day on the Confederation Line, OC Transpo buses and Para Transpo on Saturday. The O-Train Line 1 and buses will operate on a special Canada Day schedule with increased evening frequency. The O-Train will be running between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m. (July 2). OC Transpo says all trains will bypass Pimisi Station between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. to help manage the crowds. After the fireworks, westbound O-Train Line 1 trains will bypass Pimisi Station. Customers travelling westbound to neighbourhoods in Ottawa west, Nepean, Barrhaven, Kanata or Stittsville will be directed to bus service on Albert Street at Booth Street to connect with routes 57, 61, 62, 63, 74 and 75. Canadian
national anthem - O Canada!
“O Canada” is Canada's national anthem. Originally called “Chant national,” it was written in Québec City by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier (words in French) and composer Calixa Lavallée (music), and first performed there on 24 June 1880. The original French lyrics were penned the same year by judge Adolphe-Basile Routhier, as a patriotic poem celebrating Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. An English translation came in 1906, and many more followed over the years. But the one with staying power turned out to be Robert Stanley Weir’s 1908 take, which only slightly differs from the version we use today.
